DEP Secretary Visits Women’s Center to Promote Breast Cancer Awareness
Environmental Protection Secretary Kathleen A. McGinty chose Jefferson Regional Medical Center’s Women’s
Diagnostic Center to announce results of recent inspections that show Pennsylvania’s mammography facilities
provide these potentially life-saving tests in a safe and reliable way. Jefferson’s equipment was inspected
by DEP on March 23 and found to be in full compliance. "Our services are second to none," said Dr. Chan.
"Women today can feel confident that screening plays a role in preventing breast cancer deaths."

Jefferson is Number One in Pennsylvania
Jefferson Regional Medical Center was presented with the Vascular Specialty Excellence Award for
the third consecutive year recognizing its performance among the top five percent of hospitals across
the nation for vascular services. This year, Jefferson Regional is ranked number one in all of Pennsylvania.

Investing in the Communities We Serve
Jefferson Regional announced a $12 million capital spending plan for fiscal year 2007 for
additional upgrade of facilities, equipment and programs. "We know that every dollar we spend
is an investment in the health of the communities we serve." said Robert W. Horn, executive vice
president and chief operating officer.

Nurse Back from Mission Trip
A mission trip to Zimbabwe with a local church group was an eye-opening experience for Sue Bower, RN,
of the Emergency Department. As the only nurse in the group, she spent most of her time assisting at the
local hospital.

Medical Center, Caste Village Team Up for Better Health
Health care professionals from Jefferson Regional are providing free blood pressure screenings in the
Caste Commons area of Caste Village. Participants are invited to “walk the mall” and stop for blood
pressure monitoring at the Jefferson Regional table.

Former Patients Celebrate at Joint Care Picnic
300 former patients who have had total joint replacement surgery at Jefferson Regional’s Joint Care
Center, attended the annual Joint Care Picnic.

Seamless Transition in Patient Care Leadership
After a 27-year career at Jefferson Regional, Mary Ann Farmerie, RN, is retiring as vice president,
Patient Care Services. Thomas Timcho, president and CEO, announced that Louise A. Urban, RN, will succeed Farmerie as vice
president, Patient Care Services.

Murphy Addresses Health Council
Congressman Tim Murphy (PA-18) offered his “Prescription for Improving the State
of Health Care” at Jefferson Regional Medical Center’s 24th annual Community
Recognition Night on Tuesday, Aug. 22.

is increasing the demand for physician-ordered sleep studies.

New Pharmacy Named for Evancic Family
A ceremony was held at Jefferson Regional to dedicate the Kenneth F. Evancic and Family Pharmacy, in appreciation for
their monetary gift to the Foundation. Thomas P. Timcho, president and CEO, complimented the
contributions Kenneth Evancic provides to the medical center by donating his time and talents as a member of the Board of
Directors for the past four years.

"Top Doctors" Honored
Two members of the Jefferson Regional Medical Center medical
team are among area physicians honored as "Top Doctors" in the
Pittsburgh area, as announced by Pittsburgh Magazine.Michael P.
McGonigal, MD, and Taiwen Chen, MD, were selected for the
distinction based on findings compiled by Castle Connolly
Medical Ltd.

Magnotti Family Outpatient Services Center Dedicated
The Center for Outpatient Services, located on the first floor of the
hospital, has been dedicated to the family of William J. (Pat) Magnotti in
appreciation for their monetary gift to the Foundation. Magnotti has served
on the Jefferson Regional board for 11 years and is chairman of the
Medical Center Foundation board.

Diabetes Education Program Recognized
The diabetes self-management program at Jefferson Regional
Medical Center has been awarded continued recognition from the
American Diabetes Association (ADA).

Cancer Survivors Invited To Annual Celebration
All area residents who have been treated at Jefferson Regional Medical
Center for a cancer diagnosis are invited to attend the 15th annual
Cancer Survivors’ Day, "A Celebration of Life, Hope and Courage," on
Sunday, June 4, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the James Bibro Pavilion on
the Jefferson campus.

Medical Center Earns Bond Rating Upgrade
Moody’s Investors Services has upgraded Jefferson Regional Medical Center’s
bond rating to positive from stable. Robert A. Frank, senior vice president and CFO for the medical center, said
the bond upgrade "signals continued evidence of a financial turnaround. It isn’t
often that Moody’s revises its outlook from negative to positive in a span of
10 months. This event is quite notable and further validates the financial
improvements we’ve been able to accomplish."

During National Nurses Week, May 8 to 12, the medical center acknowledges
the 696 nurses who through their knowledge, commitment and compassion
provide a high quality of care for Jefferson Regional patients.

Jefferson Regional Medical Center’s Outpatient Therapy services are a great choice for
South Hills residents seeking one-on-one physical therapy. "My staff takes great pride and

Following years of design, planning and development, a new state-of-the-art
Pharmacy has opened at Jefferson Regional Medical Center, promising
continued improvements in performance and reduction in medication errors.

Breast Cancer Awareness Topic of Health Program
Jefferson Regional is partnering with UPMC Cancer Centers to present
“Breast Cancer Prevention, Detection and Treatment,” the medical center’s
first annual Women’s Health Symposium, on Thursday, May 11, 2006. The symposium will provide facts
about smoking cessation, cardiopulmonary wellness, nutrition, and skin cancer screenings.

Rapid Response Team Is Ready When Needed
When there is an unanticipated change in a patient’s condition or
when a caregiver needs additional support, the newly formed Rapid
Response Team is activated.

and ensure patient safety at a recent town hall meeting at Jefferson Regional Medical Center.

New Hope for Depression
Jefferson Regional is pioneering vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) therapy for treatment-resistant depression.
"The patient feels that this gives them new hope," said Chet Phitayakorn, MD, vascular and thoracic surgeon at Jefferson Regional.
He was one of the first surgeons to implant the stimulators after they were approved for treatment-resistant epilepsy in 1987.
